In Seminar Two, we revisit a chapter in Singapura’s history: that of the cluster of islands off our western shores referred to collectively as the Southern Islands.
(Seminar One featured the kampong histories researched by Prof Hadijah Rahmat in her voluminous book Kilat Senja, with a focus on Kampung Bedok on the eastern coast of Singapore).
The three speakers featured in Seminar Two – Ms Normala Manap, Dr Ivan Kwek, and Dr Suriani Suratman – share a passion and personal connection to these islands’ histories. Between them, they witnessed first hand the settlements’ community life in the 1980s and 1990s, the subsequent resettlement process, and its aftermath, providing us invaluable glimpses into the human aspect of a nearly-forgotten overhaul in the lives of whole communities through their documentation. While these processes are recorded in their works and publications, this discussion aims to bring their observations to life and revisit their important contributions to the corpus of Singapura’s stories.
The event will take place on Saturday, 17 May 2014, 2.30pm-5.30pm at the Possibility Room on Level 5 of the National Library.
