Singapura Stories Seminar 11: Kg Kuchai Lor 3 Geylang + Tg Rhu & Sg River

Saturday 8 Oct, 2016
2-5pm / ptg
Possibility Room, National Library
Registration via GoLibrary (hyperlink)

Kampung Kuchan / Kuchai Lorong 3 Geylang was a water village originally comprising 64 houses – each one numbered and registered. It was established from the relocation of an older water village at Tanjong Rhu, which had in turn been formed by some of the members of the old Orang Selat and Malay settlement surrounding the residence of Temenggong Abdul Rahman at Singapore River. Singapore’s Orang Selat indigenous community forms its socio-cultural core. Yet Kg Kuchai and Tanjong Rhu had an interesting socio-cultural composition as a result of its policy of accepting requests to settle. It also includes a number of well-known personalities.

The Seminar will begin with a talk by Dr Imran bin Tajudeen that retraces when, how, and why these shifts occurred and provides an overview of the information that is currently available on Kg Kuchai and its ancestor settlements. This is followed by a presentation by Mr Mohd Nassir Ismail on the efforts of former residents to maintain or re-establish ties and to collate old photographs, and a short summary by Mr Awalludin Abdul Jabbar on a project that retraced the genealogy of one of the families from the village. A forum involving former residents of Kg Kuchai will also be held.

This event is brought to you by Singapura Stories,
in collaboration with A2KKL3G Facebook Group  (Anak2 Kampong Kuchai Lorong 3 Geylang).

bersama Kumpulan Facebook A2KKL3G (Anak2 Kampong Kuchai Lorong 3 Geylang)
