Multiple Dimensions of Balestier: More than a Secondary Settlement
by Shakthi Vikram
Seminar Three presents the significance of a neighbourhood that began as an urban fringe area: Balestier. The speaker will provide a survey its late nineteenth and early twentieth century histories through extensive research synthesising and studying old maps, drawings, and photographs, and will review the official heritage narratives that have been produced for the area. Of special interest is the importance of the SIT estate in Balestier from the 1930s and 1950s, and other less well-known aspects of Balestier and their significance in Singapore history.
The second talk originally planned for Seminar Three, by Jon Poh on Dakota Crescent, has been postponed to the end of 2015 due to the speaker’s unforeseen schedule complications. We regret any disappointment caused.
