Kilat Senja by Prof Hadijah Rahmat (2005) is a seminal work on Singapura’s kampungs. It is a labour of love based on the author’s extensive fieldwork conducted in the 1980s. It contains information gleaned from her interviews with elderly residents and is thus a record of settlement and social histories of kampungs in Singapura that would otherwise have been lost entirely.
The book provides information on numerous settlements and related pioneers/founders or influential figures, including:
- Kampung Bedok – the three settlement clusters
- Haji Kahar Palembang
- Haji Abdul Salam
- Tok Janggut, Johor Lama
- Aji, Sulawesi
- Kampung Sambau (Palmer Road), Tanjong Pagar
- Kampung Selat Sengkir & Telok Saga, Pulau Brani
- Kampung Siglap
- Penghulu Lasam (Pagar Ruyong)
- Geylang Serai, several streets and clusters
- Engku Aman
- Kampung Lorong Fatimah
- Fatimah bte Haron, JP
- Kampung Lorong Muallap (Teck Hock village and plantation)
- Yeo Teck Hock alias Mohd Ali bin Abdullah (Chinese-Muslim convert / muallaf)
- and several other settlements and related personalities.
