Singapura Stories was set up in July 2012. It is an independent collaborative platform focusing on the recovery and sharing of architectural histories and the associated cultural memory of neighbourhoods, settlements, and communities that are no longer extant. It is committed to public education and sharing of these place histories through seminars and forums. It has also facilitated public discussion of findings by independent researchers, with the aim of at gathering like-minded individuals with shared interests in specific topics, and encouraging documentation efforts by former residents of expunged places.
Singapura Stories emphasises discussion on lost architecture, discarded cultural projects, demolished districts, dispersed communities, maligned community identities and practices, and hidden or drastically altered historical places whose significance or contributions have been previously overlooked or underestimated, in order to shed light on hitherto unknown or obscured aspects of Singapore history and its complex identity – aspects that would otherwise be irretrievably lost along with their physical disappearance.
As a collaborative platform, Singapura Stories aims to move away from very unhelpful generalisations and to move towards specific stories of people and places. Specific individual stories, taken together, have the power to cast serious doubts on, and perhaps even overturn the stereotypes and myths that are found in dominant narratives.
