Kampung Lorong Muallap, Kampung Lorong Teck Hock, and the origins of the roads named Defu
by Ms Nadia Yeo
Ms Nadia Yeo is the great-granddaughter of Mr Yeo Teck Hock alias Muhammad Ali bin Abdullah, the founder of Kampung Lorong Teck Hock and Kampung Lorong Muallap, which are a pair of adjoining settlements unique in Singapore history. Along with the surrounding estate lands developed in the northeast of Singapore off Tampines Road, the settlements were founded by a Muslim convert (muallaf) of Chinese descent.
Acquired by the government in 1971, the area of Kampung Lorong Muallap, Lorong Teck Hock and Teck Hock Estate has since been renamed ‘Defu’, which is the Mandarin version of the name ‘Teck Hock’. In this talk, Ms Nadia Yeo will present the history of the settlement and community of Kampung Lorong Muallap and Kampung Lorong Teck Hock based on the work done by a team of researchers who are descendants of the founder and/or are former residents themselves.
